What is 7 Continents?

For many years, City of Refuge Ministries has been working hard to liberate child slaves from the fishing industry along Ghana’s Lake Volta. Besides the physical rescue of child slaves, City of Refuge worked a great deal on educating people both in Ghana and abroad about the issues of trafficking in persons and motivating others to get involved in ending this injustice.

As a ministry, it was decided to take another approach to ending child slavery in Ghana. We saw that the issue of child trafficking often stemmed from the poverty and vulnerability of single mothers who, often times, have no alternative but to give away their children in hopes that they would have a better life with someone else.

This situation was making children a commodity, something to be sold and bought. With this issue more fully grasped, City of Refuge began to look at the problem of child trafficking in Ghana as a situation of supply and demand. The fisherman need a labor force (the demand of child slaves) to continue their fishing businesses, and mother’s need a way to provide for themselves (a supply of their children for the fishermen.)

In order for us to end this cycle of the supply and demand, we had to address the issues of the vulnerable single mother. We do this by employing her at a fair wage, helping to provide a basic education for her through reading, writing, and financial classes, introduce her to the love of Jesus Christ through discipleship training, provide her support with her children, and empower her with leadership skills for the future.
